August 2008 Splashing Phenomena!

August 2008

Norfolk appears to be the only county in the UK where owners share their swimming pools! Sophie Garrett, founder of yours2share.com, has been investigating the swimming pool sharing concept in the UK to make the pools available on her website and, mad as it seems, Norfolk seems to be unique .

Sophie: “I recently moved to Norfolk and an early conversation with a neighbour led me to explain what yours2share does. The immediate response was “Oh, you mean like pool timeshare”. I was astonished to find several “pool timeshares” around Norwich: perfect examples of fractional rental, which yours2share is designed to enable. I assumed I had somehow missed a commonplace practice. Well it may be common, but only in Norfolk. If it’s common elsewhere, it is well hidden. I can’t find any evidence of sharing pools anywhere else on the web.

The Norfolk timeshare pools offer swimmers sole use of the pool for half an hour or an hour every week for three, six or twelve months. The size of the party is restricted, with eight being a common maximum number of swimmers: all the variables depend upon the actual pool and the wishes of the owners.

Sophie: “I love swimming, so I’m keen to use one of the timeshare pools as there are few public pools near me. I’m using yours2share to look for a swimming buddy as the pools quite rightly insist that swimmers do not swim on their own. In effect I’m looking for someone to “share a share” with me.

yours2share has found that many people lucky enough to have a swimming pool do not use their asset to its full potential. Often pools are only used occasionally and sometimes, if for example children have left home, they are not used at all. People considering building a swimming pool are often interested in finding ways to help the pool to pay for itself or create some revenue.

Julie Jones, owner of the Natatorium a pool sharing company in Howe near Brooke said: “My mother-in-law, Brenda, pioneered the idea of setting up a business venture around swim sharing. This was nearly twenty years ago and now there are several swim share pools in Norfolk. I was amazed to find out this business idea has only been developed in Norfolk.”

Julie adds: “yours2share provides a good platform for profiling this and I am delighted to offer our services on the website.”

Founder Sophie says: “yours2share enables people to share their swimming pools, and find swim buddies. Sharing any valuable asset, particularly if it isn’t used all of the time, is a great way of generating income or creating a new business based on the sharing concept”.

yours2share is easy to use and post an ad. There is plenty of guidance and template contracts are available.

Here is a blog post about Sophie’s swimming buddy.

Notes to Editors:
yours2share is a website for private individuals to buy, sell or rent shares in valuable assets, or create new syndicates. This enables people to see all the options in one place, and allows them to take control and create bespoke sharing arrangements. yours2share is totally independent. It doesn’t sell any of the valuable assets, finance or insurance, so it offers an objective view of the industry.
