Saddleback pig
A couple of weeks ago I met up with some old friends for a spot of point to pointing down at Hackwood Park, near Basingstoke. In amongst the conversation, someone mentioned that they were sharing a pig. So I had to find out more. It is a private arrangement between friends. The pig owners were just starting their pig rearing, and needed some help funding the set up of shelters and fencing, as well as buying piglets. So they had asked all their friends to buy £10 shares, and in return the shareholders receive £10 of meat at supermarket prices when the pigs are slaughtered.
Apparently the share offer was completely over subscribed, with the £10 shares going like hot cakes, or should that be hot bacon rolls.
I’ve heard of other farmers offering share a pig schemes and here are the ones I’ve just found after a quick search.
Emma’s pigs based near Hereford has a lovely website and it sounds like they keep some very happy pigs leading to mouth watering pork
This US website allows you to buy half or whole pigs, and this web page usefully explains what meat you get in half a pig!
